It is one of the brands of popular Northeastern culture, Cordel literature is a poem in booklet form, is usually hung on a cord to be sold at full fair.

The Portuguese were introduced to the line in Brazil, and in the second half of the nineteenth century the brochures already had Brazilian characteristics. The main issues portrayed in the booklets are: parties, politics, droughts, disputes, fights, miracles, life of outlaws, acts of heroism, death personalities etc.

The string literature is written in rhymed form and some poems are illustrated with woodcuts, etching the same style used on the covers. Woodblock or woodcut, wood engraving means. It is the technique of making prints in relief on wood.
